Practical guide

How to run a focus session that actually holds

A focus room works best when the timer, the sound and the task are decided before you press play. Starting a video and then deciding what to work on is how the first ten minutes disappear. This short routine takes about two minutes.

  1. Write down one task. Not a project, a single next action you can finish or clearly advance in one block: “draft the introduction”, “fix the login bug”, “read chapter 4 and take notes”.
  2. Pick the block length using the table below, then start the matching timer video.
  3. Clear the desk and the screen. Close the tabs you do not need, put the phone out of reach or face down, and keep water nearby so you do not get up.
  4. Keep a “later” note. When an unrelated thought shows up (an email to send, something to buy), write it down and go back to the task. Deal with the list during the break.
  5. Take the break for real. Stand up, look away from the screen, move. Checking messages during the break usually makes the next block harder to start.

Which timer to choose

FormatGood forWatch out for
25 / 5 (classic Pomodoro)Starting when motivation is low, admin tasks, revision, days with many interruptions. Can cut deep work too early. If you keep ignoring the bell, move to 50/10.
50 / 10Writing, coding, design and study sessions that need time to warm up.Hard to start cold. Try one 25-minute block first, then switch.
90 / 20One or two deep blocks a day on your most demanding work.Tiring. Plan it when you are rested and keep the rest of the day lighter.

After four short blocks or two long ones, take a longer break of 20 to 30 minutes. There is no single correct format: keep the one after which you still feel able to do another block.

Which background sound to choose

No-vocal music (lo-fi, ambient, soft piano)

Lyrics compete with the words you are reading or writing, which is why our focus music has no vocals. A steady rhythm helps many people settle into repetitive work such as coding, data entry or drawing.

Rain and nature ambience

Irregular but soft, rain masks sudden noises such as doors, traffic or conversations in an open office. It suits reading and writing, where even instrumental melodies can pull attention.

Brown, pink and white noise

Constant noise covers the widest range of background sounds. Brown noise is the deepest and is often described as the least tiring over long sessions; white noise is brighter and can feel harsh after a while.

Keep the volume low, just loud enough to cover the room. If you notice the music itself, it is too loud or too complex for the task.

A note on ADHD

A visible timer and steady background sound are common strategies people with ADHD use to start a task and stay on it. They support focus; they are not a treatment. If attention problems are affecting your studies, work or daily life, talk to a doctor or a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

Is the music free to use while studying or working?

Yes, for personal listening on YouTube while you study or work.

Why are there no vocals?

Words in a song compete with the words you are reading or writing. Instrumental and ambient tracks stay in the background instead.

Is the content made with AI?

Some visuals and music are created with the help of AI tools.

How long should I work before a long break?

Most people do well with about two hours of blocks (four 25-minute blocks or two 50-minute blocks) before a 20 to 30 minute break.
